Before we went, I kept getting confused by two names: Cheongpung Lake Tourism Monorail and Cheongpungho Lakeside Cable Car. They sound almost identical, and everything I read said they were in the same area — so I assumed they were the same thing.

They are not. They are two separate operations, with different stations, different prices, different hours, and different closing days. You board them in different places, which matters more than anything else here.

The best route is monorail up, cable car down. You get the slow forest climb one way and the open lake view the other. A free shuttle runs from the cable car’s lower station back to where the monorail starts, so you can return to your car.

Three things that catch people out:

• The monorail ticket window closes at 4:30pm. Two hours before the cable car’s. Arrive late and the up-monorail route is off the table.
• The monorail must be booked the day before. Same-day booking is not available.
• Children under 36 months cannot ride the monorail at all.

Which One, If You Only Do One

Cable car — nine minutes, barely any sway, 10-person cabins. Easy with small children, and fine if you don’t like heights. At the top you get the full panorama of the lake.

Monorail — 23 minutes climbing through forest, in a small car that holds six. The lake doesn’t appear until the trees open near the top, which is the part people remember. Seats are small and there is some vibration.

If you have a toddler, the cable car is the only option. If you have older kids and time, the monorail is the better ride.

Booking

Cable car: no time slot needed. Buy on arrival.

Monorail: book online the day before. Same-day online booking is not possible. Most people buy on site, and that works on weekdays — but on weekends, book ahead.

Bring ID showing your child’s age. The under-36-months rule is enforced at the gate, and the child fare covers ages 3 through 6th grade (middle school and up pay adult).

Getting There

Two addresses. Save both.

• Cable car (lower station): search 청풍호반케이블카 하부승강장 (물태리역)
• Monorail: 충청북도 제천시 청풍면 청풍명월로 879-17 — Dogok-ri station

Driving from Seoul takes a little over two hours. We left just after 9am, which put us there around late morning — early enough to do both rides and still get back the same day. If you want the monorail, leaving later than mid-morning is risky, because its ticket window shuts at 4:30pm.

Without a car: express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal → Jecheon Terminal, then 20–25 minutes by taxi. Buses run frequently and drop you in the city centre. KTX also reaches Jecheon, but the bus is simpler.

Closures — Call First

The monorail is closed on Mondays. The cable car runs most days, closing about once a month for maintenance.

Either can also stop mid-operation for wind or weather.

At the Top

Bibongsan Peak sits at 531m, and the observation deck is open on all sides. Don’t plant yourself at one railing — walk the full circle. Each direction gives you a different view of the lake and the mountains behind it.

There is also a glass-floor section, and two paid attractions on site.

Cinema 360 is a spherical screening room. You stand on a transparent bridge six metres up while footage plays all around you — floor, walls, ceiling. ₩10,000, or ₩5,000 with a cable car ticket.

Fantasy Art Museum is a trick-art gallery: painted backdrops built for photos, so you appear to be inside a dinosaur egg, held by an octopus, or in front of a shark. ₩7,000, or ₩4,000 with a cable car ticket.

Neither is remarkable on its own. But Cheongpung Lake is a long drive from anywhere, and once you’ve made the trip these fill an hour without another journey. Buy your cable car ticket first — the discount is close to half price on both, and children tend to get more out of the trick-art room than adults do.

Worth the Trip?

Cheongpung Lake is quiet in a way the big-name Korean attractions aren’t. The scenery changes completely by season — snow on the mountains in winter, clear water in summer, colour in autumn — and from 531m you see all of it at once.

Two rides up the same mountain sounds redundant until you do both. They’re not the same trip.
