To My 10-Year-Old Girl Growing Through Fear

You feel at ease
only when everything is lined up just right.
And when something crosses the line, even a little,
your whole body feels uncomfortable.
It must feel tight inside,

and I know that must be so hard for you.

There are lovely emotions in this world,
happiness, joy, excitement,
feelings that warm your heart.

But there is also boredom,
and sadness, and frustration.
And sometimes, those feelings seem bad to you,
so you gather them all,
holding every one of them inside your small body
until they spill out in the only way you know.

It must be heavy.

And  it’s okay.
We can move through this together.

Even difficult things,
when touched gently, little by little,
can someday become your strengths,
quietly shining like precious stones.

And with time,
the things that feel so big today
will often grow small enough to rest softly in your hands.

So you don’t have to hold every worry alone.
You can share them with me.

I’m always here,
right beside you.

You are strong enough,
and your heart is warm,

Whoever you become,
and however your feelings move and change,
my love for you will never change.
Not once.
Not ever.

Always,
Mom
